  • The guidelines for establishing Private Universities were released by UGC in 2003 - University Grants Commission (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003.
  • The concept of establishment of Self-financed Universities (SFUs) in Maharashtra was initiated in the year 2011.
  • Model guidelines for establishing SFUs were issued on 29th May, 2013 after approval of the State Cabinet.
  • It was resolved that each SFU shall be established through a separate State Act to further following Objectives:
    • To create higher levels of intellectual abilities and to create & deploy new educational programs to promote creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship
    • To establish state-of-the-art facilities for education & development
    • To create centers of excellence for research and development in Science & Technology and Socio Economic development
    • To carry out teaching and research and offer continuing quality education program
    • To provide professional & development services to the industry, public organizations and society
    • To establish links, collaborations and partnerships with other higher education & research institutions in India and abroad
  • 20 SFU Acts have been passed by the State Legislature till date and 19 SFUs are operationalized.
